What Were Binary Options Scams?

Binary options were marketed as simple, short-term trades in which the customer predicted whether the price of an asset would rise or fall within a set period. In practice, the Financial Conduct Authority states that binary options are a form of fixed-odds betting, and from 2 April 2019 firms were banned from selling them in the UK. The FCA now warns that if you are still being offered binary options, it is probably a scam.

Many victims were approached through polished websites, social media adverts, search-engine promotions, and cold calls. The firms behind these schemes often claimed to have a London office or a UK-facing presence, but the underlying operator was frequently based overseas and outside effective regulatory reach. Victims were encouraged to deposit money quickly, open repeated positions, and add more funds after early apparent gains.

Historic UK enforcement material also shows the scale of harm. The City of London Police stated in October 2017 that 2,065 reports of binary options fraud had been made to Action Fraud since 2012, with reported losses of £59,424,178. Those figures reflected a pattern of aggressive sales conduct, false credibility signals, and serious difficulty recovering money once a customer tried to withdraw.

How the Binary Options Scam Worked

Although the names of the websites and account managers varied, many binary options scams followed the same structure.

  • Professional-looking marketing: Fraudsters used sophisticated websites, trading dashboards, and advertising copy designed to resemble legitimate investment platforms.
  • False urgency and unrealistic expectations: Victims were told to act quickly, copy a “senior trader”, or make one more payment to unlock larger returns or bonuses.
  • Platform manipulation: The FCA has warned that scam firms may manipulate software, fake prices, and falsify payouts so that account balances appear healthier than they really are.
  • Withdrawal obstruction: When customers asked to withdraw funds, the firm might impose bonus terms, turnover requirements, document checks, or sudden account restrictions.
  • Repeated top-up requests: After losses or failed withdrawals, the victim was often persuaded to send more money to recover previous losses or “hedge” open positions.
  • Recovery-room follow-up fraud: Once the original scam ended, the victim might be contacted again by a separate business offering to recover the money for an upfront fee.

Where money was sent from a UK current account, debit card, or credit card, there may still be routes worth examining. A bank’s initial rejection does not always end the matter. The central question is whether the bank or payment provider responded appropriately to the warning signs present at the time of the transaction.

Why Binary Options Losses Still Need Investigation

Victims are sometimes told there is nothing that can be done because the website has disappeared, the trading account was outside the UK, or the payments were authorised by the customer. That is not always the end of the analysis. Depending on how the transaction was made and what warning signs were present, it may be possible to argue that a reimbursement complaint, chargeback request, Section 75 claim, or Financial Ombudsman Service complaint should be pursued.

The practical starting point is evidence. Banks and ombudsman investigators usually want to see the transaction trail, the sales communications, the representations made to you, and any record of refused withdrawals. A well-organised chronology can materially improve the quality of a complaint.

Signs You May Have Been Misled

Binary options fraud cases often contain recurring warning signs. If several of the following apply to your experience, your losses may justify a closer complaint review.

You were contacted unexpectedly through social media, search advertising, or a cold call.

The firm claimed to be based in London or linked to the UK, but gave unclear regulatory information.

The website showed apparent profits, yet withdrawals were delayed, blocked, or made conditional on further deposits.

You were pressured to act quickly, trust an account manager, or send more money to recover earlier losses.

Bonus terms or trading-volume requirements were used to prevent you accessing your own funds.

After the scam, another business contacted you offering to recover the money for an upfront fee.

What to Do If You Lost Money to a Binary Options Scam

Gather your records

Collect bank statements, card statements, screenshots of the trading platform, account balances, terms and conditions, and all sales emails or messages.

Write a clear timeline

Set out when you were first contacted, how much you paid, what you were told, and what happened when you tried to withdraw funds.

Contact your bank or card provider

Report the matter as suspected fraud and ask the firm to review the payments in light of the scam indicators present at the time.

Report the fraud

Report the matter to Action Fraud and keep the reference number, as it may assist later complaints and evidence gathering.

Preserve evidence of refused withdrawals

Save any messages about bonus clauses, compliance checks, turnover rules, or account suspensions, because these often show how the scam operated.

Get a specialist review

A structured review can help identify whether an APP fraud complaint, chargeback request, Section 75 claim, or Ombudsman escalation is worth pursuing.

Can I Recover Money Lost to Binary Options Scams?

Potential recovery routes depend on the facts, the payment method, and the evidence available. We commonly assess four areas.

  • Authorised push payment complaints: If you transferred money from a UK bank account after being persuaded by misleading representations, the bank’s fraud-prevention response may need to be examined in detail.
  • Financial Ombudsman Service complaints: If the bank or payment provider rejects your complaint, the Ombudsman may be able to review whether the decision was fair and reasonable.
  • Chargeback and card disputes: Where a debit or credit card was used, card-scheme remedies may be relevant depending on timing, merchant information, and the nature of the transaction.
  • Section 75 analysis: If you used a credit card and the legal requirements are met, statutory protection under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 may be available.

No reputable adviser should guarantee that money will be recovered. However, a failed first complaint does not necessarily mean there is no case. Many disputes turn on how the bank assessed the warning signs, what it knew or ought to have known, and whether the customer’s instructions were given in a context shaped by fraud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my money back from a binary options scam?

Potentially, yes. Whether recovery is possible depends on the payment route, the available evidence, and how your bank or payment provider responded to the warning signs surrounding the transactions. We review each case on its own facts.

What are your fees?

We operate on a no-win, no-fee basis. If your claim is successful, we charge a fee of 15% + VAT of the total compensation awarded. If we do not recover any money for you, there is no fee to pay.

Does it matter if my bank has already rejected my complaint?

No. A bank rejection does not automatically mean the complaint is finished. In some cases, the matter can be challenged further or referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service for an independent review.

Are binary options legal in the UK?

The FCA states that firms have been banned from selling binary options in the UK since 2 April 2019. If a firm is still offering binary options to UK consumers, that is a serious warning sign and may indicate a scam.

Can I complain myself for free?

Yes. You can complain to your bank or payment provider yourself, and if necessary you may also be able to escalate the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service without paying us.

What evidence should I keep?

Keep payment records, platform screenshots, account statements, emails, chat messages, call notes, promotional material, and any proof that the firm delayed or refused withdrawals. These documents can be important when presenting a complaint.
