What Was BTCMining Ltd?
BTCMining Limited was a UK-registered company (Company Number: 15415402) that purported to operate a legitimate cryptoasset mining business. The firm solicited investments globally, promising clients that their funds would be used to mine cryptocurrency, which would then generate regular financial returns.
However, following extensive complaints to Action Fraud from investors across the world—including New Zealand, Estonia, Iran, Poland, Romania, and Mauritania—the UK’s Insolvency Service launched an investigation. They discovered that customers who paid for these mining services did not receive the promised returns and were entirely unable to withdraw their assets.
On 29 April 2025, BTCMining Limited was compulsorily wound up following a hearing at the High Court in Manchester, presented by the Secretary of State for Business and Trade in the public interest. The investigation revealed the company used a false registered address in the UK, and its sole director, Stibich Martins Yhaicha Luzia, was uncooperative and untraceable.
How the BTCMining Scheme Worked
The operation followed a classic pattern often seen in sophisticated cryptocurrency investment frauds:
- The Initial Lure: Investors were targeted with promises of high, consistent returns generated through professional cryptocurrency mining operations.
- The Illusion of Legitimacy: The firm used its UK Companies House registration to project an image of regulatory compliance and security, despite having no genuine physical presence in the country.
- Trapped Assets: Once funds were deposited, the “mining” either did not occur or the profits were entirely fictitious. When investors attempted to withdraw their capital or purported earnings, their requests were ignored or blocked.
- Further Payment Demands: In many cases, victims reported being subjected to demands for additional payments—often framed as ‘taxes’, ‘withdrawal fees’, or ‘security deposits’—before any funds could be released. This is a hallmark of advance-fee fraud.
